Pino Palladino, Gary Willis, NHOP all on this album but who plays what?

Discussion in 'Bassists [BG]' started by number six, Jun 13, 2018.

  1. I have great faith in the global outreach of Talkbass forums!

I just found and album by Maria Harp from 2007 titled '14 Pieces for Harp and Bass'

"Vocal jazz with excursions to pop and fusion, an album full of surprises, with guitarist Matt Otten, his compositions, and four world renowned bass players, Pino Palladino, Gary Willis, Niels Henning Orsted Pedersen, Hein van de Geyn."

Top bass playing here but who plays on which tracks?

I can probably identify Pino's flatwound Precision but some tracks may have both upright and electric, I can't tell.

Maybe someone has the sleeve notes but I reckon the bass playing fraternity of Talkbass will tell me who's who. Show me!

PS there are some lovely solo's, especially on "I'll Talk With You".

  2. Not a single reply . . . and I thought Palladino, NHOP and Willis were well-known . . .

They are well known, but Maria Harp maybe not so as much around here. I have a lot of music and she's new to me and will probably pick that album up, thanks for the heads up.

I listened to 2-3 samples at Amazon.
    Harp's vocals are stellar.

I'm guessing "Put On Your Wings" is NHOP...this kinda stuff is right in his wheelhouse.

There's a video on YouTube that seems to claim that "I'll talk with you" is Pino. Awesome music OP! Thanks for the heads up!

  9. Well done JimK.
I spoke to Maria and she confirmed the first 3 tracks are NHOP.
Pino on the next three with van de Geyn also on track 5.
Tracks 7-10 are Gary Willis with van de Geyn on the last ones.
I didn't think to contact the artist first up so posted here first.

...when I first got online ('98?), I e-mailed a few (Some highlights: Chuck Rainey, Steve Khan, Fima Ephron, Billy Drummond, Alphonso Johnson)-
Because I thought that was what you did.

I have this album (I have everything Gary Willis has ever done and bass is not even my main instrument :) The other guys are all very solid too of course. My favorite NHOP record is the one he did with Scofield and Dave Liebman (Dancing on the Tables)

Thanks for reminding me about this one OP!

I have Dancing On Tables...I think it great!

First NHOP album I ever heard-

Christmas morning, 1976. My Parents bought me a new stereo & this was one of the Xmas albums...the 1st one I spun on that stereo, too.
NHOP's full tone blew me away.
