PJ for my 40th

My wife wants to buy me a bass for my 40th birthday this month. I have been looking at PJ Basses as that is the tone I am looking for. Preferably looking for US made instruments but will entertain foreign if the quality is there. The budget is around 1200. I have been looking at G&L SB-2’s. Can you all make any recommendations on that budget be it new or used? It would be greatly appreciated.
