I’ve noticed that with my Carvin PB5, with Nordstrand NP5 and Big J Blade pickups, I can have even string volume with either pickup soloed, but then when the pickups are blended, the A string is louder. Sometimes it’s not a big deal, depending on location. In a small room, I don’t notice anything. But a couple times in the last few months, in different large locations, it became a problem. I’m probably more picky than most people, so I’m not saying it makes the setting unusable, but it’s enough that both times I decided to just go with the P pickup. Any ideas as to why and if there’s a possible fix? Again, each pickup soloed is fine, so it shouldn’t be a string height issue.
I don’t know, but I’m speculating it might be the 5 string split coil design in combination with phase cancellation when running the two pickups together. The A string is right where the split coils meet/overlap, which I assume is not ideal on a 5 string bass, and phase cancellation might bring that out more than running the pickup soloed. I don’t know what to do about it except to set the A string side of the pickup lower where it’s slightly weak in P mode and slightly strong in PJ, then work with technique to balance it out. Or, just do what you are doing, which is probably the smarter solution anyway... Hope someone can chime in with a more useful answer...
Yeah that was my thinking. I wonder if having a preamp with active blending like the Audere would help with the issue.
