Give a shout-out if you have had the same bass as your main "player" for 20 years or more. Couple of ground rules.

    - Definition of "main player" = the one you play 95% or more of the time.

    - Playing different models of the same bass doesn't count (e.g., you've played Jazz Basses for 20 years but you're on your 3rd one)... it has to be the same bass for 20+ years.

    - Mods to the bass are fine as long as it is still the same bass you were gigging 20+ years ago.

Mine's a 78 P, been playing it since 1983 with only a couple of very brief diversions (like, a few days each time with a different axe).

I've been using the same hands for over 20 years. Does that count?

A 1984-ish Fender USA Bullet Deluxe - kind of a tele-style bass. Sold it a bit more than a year ago and kind of miss looking at it.
  7. You can keep a single bass as your main player for 20 years BEFORE joining TB . . . this place has a habit of changing things like that though :bag:

I bought a 1977 Rick 4001 new from Manny's in New York when I was 16. It was my only bass until 2006 when I added a fretless Warwick. On our last gig I used the Rick on
about 35 of the 40 tunes we played and the 'wick on the rest.

Really thinking I ought to retire her but I love playing her too much.

Pics of these loyal road-warrior axes would be great, too - mojo welcome!

If someone could PM me on how I can get pictures into my posts, that would be great.

    Thanks again!
  12. My '89 G&L sb-1. Been my main rig since '91. Well, almost 20 years.

Yep, I'm old! Picked up my '65 Jazz as an "old" used bass in 1972 or 1973 for $250 or so. At that time, I was seriously considering buying a somewhat decent used car for that same $250. The bass won, and has been my constant companion ever since. Sure, I have/had other basses (currently on hand: Precision A/E fretless, Turner Renaissance RB5FL, a Roscoe Beck 5, and a 1939 Kay double bass) but the Jazz has been my absolute main bass for 36 years. I've had to adjust the truss rod maybe 5 or 6 times during its stay with me.

Still play the same Ibanez Roadstar that I bought when I was 17. I'm 45 now. It's the only bass I have.

My '78 Jazz. It's still my go to bass. I'll never sell her.

    Isn't Sponge Bob on somewhere??!!

  18. Here's my '75 A-necked P. I bought it new in May of '77.
Played MANY a gig over the years.
It was recently retired when I bought my '06 '50s Classic P.

    *I did buy a '03 '51RI and a used '01 MIM Standard P, they were in rotation with my '75 P*

I ordered my Modulus Quantum-6 SPX in 1988, took delivery just a couple weeks after the calendar clicked over to 1989, and it's been my main bass ever since. (Admittedly there are some gigs where it's inappropriate, so it hasn't been used on everything. But it's been the first one I reach for whenever employers ask for me rather than just "a bass player".)

And I got my Steinberger L-2 brand new in 1982, though that's been relegated to "Main Backup Bass" status...it comes to every studio recording session I do, and gets used whenever I need something compact/transportable, or impervious to the elements, or that elicits a techno vibe. It doesn't get used a lot anymore (it was my Main Bass from 82-89), but it always gets used year after year.

(edit: pics posted on next page)
