If he mainly plays blues then you might want to get some blues bass patterns under your fingers. I'll put in a shameless plug for my "Beginning Blues Bass" book published by Alfred/NGW. The book has many blues bass lines in it so you can play over blues progressions in a shuffle style, straight 8th, slow blues, 16 bar blues, 8 bar blues, jazz blues, funk blues and more. The book also exposes you to tools used to create blues bass lines by teaching you Dominant 7th chords, Blues scales, major and minor pentatonic scales, the Mixolydian mode and more. Also listen to blues artists. Let me know how it goes. -Dave
