A lot of people have told me that playing bass through a guitar amp will break the speakers but does it do any damage to the amp? can you play through a guitar amp head and bass cab?
At sensible levels at home it will not damage or break the drivers. If you hear it starting to sound bad, turn down. No it will not damage the amp. Guitar head - bass cab is a workable combination, and will be fine, but volume to gig my be low due to low power on amp. If the amp is tube, just be sure to connect it to the correct impedance taps and enjoy.
It should be noted that may bassists do this on purpose as an effect. enwhistle from the who comes to mind... I think the guy from nomeansno does it too.
And Lemmy uses it all the time. Another alternative is to biamp; use an SS amp as a dedicated sub and cross ir or a uitar amp at 150Hz or so, and the sub is doing all the heavy lifting, and you're putting no strain on the guitar head and getting 99% of it's tone, even at high levels.
