I tried to play this on bass, didn't work out so well. Drop D tuning and awkward fingering, just didn't sound right. Has/does anyone play synth lines transcribed to bass? Some of those 80s lines are just to funky to leave be.

Watch as Skeet funks the HELL out of this synth line for P Funk.

Lots of them, both synth basses and lead synths, both on DB and BG, but usually much more modern than 80s. Just listen closely to how the part really sounds, play the right notes with a big tone, mute them at the right time, and you'll be most of the way there. I don't even bother with effects live, though you could do an envelope-following filter (autowah) to simulate an analog synth's low-pass filter, a trance gate to fake an arpeggiator etc.

Here is a track with a bass guitar run through a low-pass filter and heavy compression, and also a bowed DB run through autotune, compression, an amp simulator and a trance gate for a fake synth sound. And for something different, here is me playing synth parts on DB with no effects whatsover - compare to the original.
