When I was in high school (back about 73) and first interested in playing bass I had an all black high gloss hollow body violin bass with white trim all around. The pickguard was below the neck, raised above the body and was of the same colors. What was really cool (I didn't think so at the time, funny how our tastes change) was that the headstock was ornately turned just like a violin or upright bass. I've seen some that are turned at the top but the sides are flat. I'm pretty sure it was some cheapo thing. It was used and I traded the guy at the music store even for a Slingerland snare drum. I thought I remembered it being a Univox, but all the Univox basses I can find aren't really close to the way it looked. Does anyone have an idea what brand of bass this was or where I might find info on how to ID it?

This is my first post, hope I did it right! I've been lurking awhile and have learned all sorts of cool things here. Maybe after a couple of years of working hard with my bass teacher I can share some of my wisdom! :)

    Thanks for your help.

Thanks, the black one is exactly it! Now if I can find one in good shape at a reasonable price. Married, two kids, two basses. Ha!

    Thanks again :D :D :D

Here's a photo. I wish I hadn't traded it for a Fender look alike that was truely just that. I never could get a good sound out of it. Pretty much killed my interest in bass until last year. Now I'm back on track.

Hey darkspec, glad to see that I'm not the only one that digs this bass. What I liked about it at the time, was it was all black and it didn't look exactly like a Hofner. I thought the headstock was just plain weird. Wish I had it back! Now that I know what it was I'll be watching for one.

    thats so cool!

Just as I saw that headstock I thought of how my giutarist always tells me "dude, you should get a scroll head bass....it has the head of an upright on a normal neck!" I dunno why he is so persistant.....

yah, just thought i'd share that :p
