Dear talkbass friends, i was recently diagnosed with a genetic disease called HEMOCHROMATOSIS, an iron overload disease, which means that your body assimilates much more iron than normal people and is unable to put it out of the body.
The iron is toxic and deposits mainly in the liver , heart, pancreas , articulations and brain, causing mostly cirrhosis, liver cancer, diabetes, arthtrites and sudden heart attacks. Its a disease that can go undecteted easily, because its exam is not very common and is not included in your regular doctor check up exams.
Theres no cure for the disease, except that you will have to make lots of phlebotomys(taking half liter of blood at a time) to take the iron out of your body but if diagnosed soon and before main organ damage, you can have a normal life expectancy, i was a heavy drinker for a long time, and that contributes for acelarating the liver damage combined with the iron, so, talk to your doctor and make the damn test, the gene of this disease was just discovered in 1996, as you can see , kind of brand new thing, but the doctors think every year thousands of people die of liver problems, heart attacks, caused by this silent killer disease..... so MAKE THE TEST, you have 99% of chances of not having it, but in case you have it, it can save your life or the life of somebody in your family( if you have it, close parents should also be checked)... early detection is the main thing for a normal life, so once again, check that with your doctor, the test can save your life like i hope it saved mine just on time.
best regards to you all, i think its very important to spread the word about a disease that probably its been killing people for hundreds of years but just recently was discovered...
i hope this thread doesnt go against no forum rules, i just felt i had to talk about it since like i said, early detection can save your life.. all the best for you all.

  2. Wow. I'm glad that they caught it in time. Thanks, Nuno, for passing on this information. And best of health and luck to you in dealing with this disease. I have a physical scheduled after the first of the year, and I'll be sure to ask my doctor about it.

What were the symptoms that lead to the diagnosis?

The only symptom i had was an ocasional strong abdominal pain on the lower left part of the abdomen, i make 2 colonoscopys and a bunch of exams, doctors found nothing, until a month ago a doctor sugested that i make the ferritin test, it was so high that i made the genetic test for hemochomatosis and got positive...
the worst about it is that you usually dont have any symptoms until some major organ is really damaged, usually the liver, pancreas and even the heart . its crazy how in a day your life can change so much... your drinking and eating habits, everythings has to change, but im happy they found it now and not in a couple of years...
