You get a PM from a TB mamber who has a screen name that does not reflect their real name. In the PM, they use their real name. Is it OK then to use their real name when you are replying to them in a thread?

I know I have done this a couple times in the past, which makes me wonder if I have possibly offended the person. I was just about to do it this afternoon, but decided to throw it out for discussion. I understand the ultimate way to resolve the issue is to just PM the person. I just thought it may be interesting to have an open discussion about it.

If I tell you my name, you can use it in a forum.

    No big deal.

surely using their real name just serves to confuse other user's who don't know that bass_player198429395828's real name is reginald for example...

    you'd think my name is olly...it ain't...:D

I would say yes, it's ok. I would avoid it unless quoting the person though as it can be confusing, unless their screen name is an obvious variation on their actual name.

Well, I think my opinion on this is somewhat obvious. :D

I've thought about this, too, and on several occasions have called someone by their name after seeing someone else call that person by his/her name.

I don't mind someone calling me Trevor, or one of my nicknames -- T.J., my first and MIDDLE initial (not first and last, even though my last initial is also J) or Teej, which is what you'd get if you tried to pronounce "tj"). In fact, I'd encourage it.

I don't think that Dig Me has a problem with people openly calling him the Qintar.

I say no, but because I err on the side of not stepping on someone's toes.

Although, if Jokerjkny's real name is Jae, I think he should go by it more often.

    I'm pretty ok with it.

I usually reserve signing my name for PMs, but I certainly don't mind people calling me by name on the forum once I'm on a first name basis with them.

Why anyone would call me the Qintar is beyond me...openly or closedly.

  11. What's a TB mamber?

Clearly a very sarcastic creature. ;)

And you can all call me Steve.

    That's my opinion.

    Gosh, sorry Mr. DigMe/bc sir!

(Notice I have both bases covered for you!)

    But I digest...

I always use their given name if I know it. If someone gets offended by that I probably don't need to PM them anyway.

    Tsk tsk,

a little humility would serve you well.

(coming from a guy who would LOVE to have FAR more than 2 basses! O.k. I have four, but still...)
