Are you familiar with Serge Gainsbourg? If so then to what degree would you say you are familiar with his music and/or his life story?
I thought I had pretty big music radar but that name came up nada in my memory banks, I will investigate now though.
Hell yeah, big fan here. But I’m also into related under the radar stuff like Jacques Brel and Scott Walker, plus all the Ye-Ye girl pop. Serge was a character, had a long idiosyncratic career, but as a French language only artist, was only going to be a cult item. So, yeah, OK, “Je T’aime” and all that, but there’s other great tracks… (covered by the band Luna)
I know the name, and of course, Je T'Aime was a great song...loved the distinctive bass sound. (A great thread on that, including input from the man responsible here...Serge Gainsbourg - that Je t'aime bass sound (Again) | TalkBass.com) I've got an album of his somewhere...my french is hopeless, but he sounded so so cool. I actually did sound for a show Jane Birkin did in Dublin years ago...a truly classy woman.
A true giant, in my humble opinion. A very gifted songwriter, an icon, creator of delightful puns and mots d'esprit. And, lucky!, an ugly man who was loved by women like Brigitte Bardot, Catherine Deneuve, and the wooooonderful Jane Birkin
Had his hand on a lot of different songs. And held his cigarettes too long. Seems like the kind of guy who would rip the filter off a Marlboro.
There were two albums recorded with Sly & Robbie: Aux Armes Et Caetera (1979) and Mauvaises Nouvelles Des Etoiles (1981). I think Aux Armes is the better album but Mauvaises Nouvelles has some nice playing on it. Both albums were re-released in the early 2000s with additional dub and DJ versions.
Interesting character, great musician. Was into him a lot about 10 years ago… I mostly know his late 60s/early 70s music. Melody Nelson is of course a classic, and thanks to the link above I now know it wasn’t Herbie Flowers on bass! (Or was he?) interestingly, just the other day I was thinking about him, more about his private life. Cannot decide if i find his story rather sad or not, particularly the last 10 years… gotta check out Aux Armes, it didn’t impress me last time I gave it a go, but my tastes have changed…
