I play bass occasionally, and I don't have a bunch of money to spend on a bass. My favorite bass sound has come from a MIJ P-bass Lyte, but I really want a five string. My budget is $700, maybe a touch more, so I can't just grab a Valenti or LowEnd. My options seem to be very limited, and I'd probably need to pay someone to do the work.

I should also mention that I really prefer the look of a traditional Fender-style bass, but I can get over that if there's a great option.

Be patient and look for a used Yamaha BB615. When I was looking for a low-budget P/J 5, I found a used BB415 (the passive version) in great shape. Of course, you could also mod a BB425X to your liking, but the BB615 already has a decent 3-band EQ.

Schecter has a few that might meet your needs...

    Buy a used Fender P5
Have it modded for a J pickup at the bridge
    Install preamp of choice

You'd likely need to buy the buy with that budget, then save up to do the mods later...

A friend of mine has one of these and has mentioned selling it. I forgot it's a P/J--I just think of it as an Ibanez. :D

I'll definitely have to try it out.

I didn't know the 615 is active. I've seen them for about $400 on GC. The 1025 and 2025 are both passive though, right?

Get an Ibanez SR655 if you like narrow spacing and slim profile, or get a TMB605 if you like wider spacing, and a Fender like feel.

    Yes, they're both passive.
