okay, so i recently bought this SX J :http://www.rondomusic.com/sjb75ctna.html

    here is mine, stock:
    100_3029.jpg

i love the look of the ashtray and pickup cover, but the pickup cover gets in the way of playing, and i cant figure out if the ashtray alone looks right or not.

i am also undecided if it looks better with the maple/black blocks or if i should get a rosewood/white blocks.

    so the choices are:
    maple/black blocks with ashtray
    maple/black blocks without ashtray
    rosewood/white blocks with ashray
    rosewood/white blocks without ashtray

i am curious about looks only, i am indifferent to the sound.

any photoshoppers care to help with either scenario?

If you take off 1 cover IMO you should take off the other. Also, the neck looks good, and why would you buy another for the same bass?

  3. I think jazz basses look a LOT better with just the pickup cover and no bridge cover. If you want to change something, change the pickguard. That would make the most difference. The black blocks look great, IMO.

I'd say simply replace the pickguard and put on a black one to match the black blocks. However, if you really want a rosewood neck with white blocks, then you need a white pickguard.

Regarding the pickup cover and ashtray, I'm not a fan of them. They can look really nice but I think they can get in the way so my personal preference would be to remove both.

Remove the Ashtray, leave the pickup cover and practice with it on. You'll get better!

Replace the Tort PG with a Black PG! It'll look much better IMHO!

hmm... i really dig the tort guard and will keep it. if i keep the pickup cover on, i will leave the ashtray on, too. im more interested in if you all think it looks weird with JUST the ashtray. my P has just the ashtray and it looks killer, but this aint no P!

    keep this poll going!

    Pickup covers FTW!!!

You can rest your thumb or hand on them, they look amazing, and give the bass a vintage vibe....why the hate for them?:bawl:

Bruh, leave that pickup cover on. Do what you will with the ashtray but LEAVE THAT PICKUP COVER ON. P Basses are the exact opposite of the J Bass. P Basses look good with only the ashtray on or naked. They don't look good with a pickup cover on to me.

I disagree. The tort is sex. I think the look of that bass stock is so awesome, you could only bugger it up by switching things around...

Yep, and I'm one of those guys that screams it the loudest. But the blocks add another factor to consider and that's why I went against my usual "TORT!!!" suggestion a few posts up and said black. With a neck that's sexy-fied with blocks, I think the pickguard should match the blocks to complete the sexy-fication. :D

That being said, that's merely my opinion. If you love the tort, then keep the tort. No need to try to satisfy knuckleheads on an online forum. ;)
