Voted "in a band" (two actually) even if "for fun" and "in a band" definitely isn't mutually exclusive as far as I'm concerned...
Because i cant have a drum set where I live ,so i got the next best thing in the rythm section(the only thing ). all kidding aside even when i was drumming I always had a slight interest in bass,my buddy also played drums(your fav and mine=geezer )and we took up bass together when we moved into the same building, now our landlord hears dueling fenders. I must say I am glad i did,it opened a whole other world to me which i new existed but was to lazy to venture,Its a choice i'm glad I made.
FOR THE CHICKS! That is a huge bonus but seriously I can already play drums so I needed a new challenge musically and I just wanted to be my own rhythm section. Put my vote in for all the above!
Gee-tars have the frets too close together and the strings too close together and those tiny strings hurt my fingers. Waaah. (And I think tube distortion must fry brain cells. . . . At least most of the guitarists I know had something mess up their heads. I wouldn't want to risk it.) And I'm about deaf in the higher frequencies anyway. But I can FEEL the bass and the kick drum. What more do I need? I played trombone for years before I picked up a bass. Not much call for trombone players in most of the music I like. But the 'bone is considered a "low brass" instrument. So I had that "low" thing going from the start.
I play bass for a bunch of reasons.... -I don't like the tiny strings, -I don't like narrow spacing, -The low end is infinitely cooler, -I love the feel and looks of the instrument itself, -It's just so fun to play, -I prefer that role in a band to anything else, -I can be in a band and make something of myself, -I can be in a band and possibly get chicks/fame/money to some extent, -My ego is too tasteful to play guitar, -And I can brag about fingering better That about covers it.
Bass just appealed to me.. For some reason I never even thought about getting a guitar or anything. I just liked bass all along.
Cos I look like a bassist. That aside I love the sound it makes, feel it gives, and in music the only option to own that feel is to play. I want to express myself here: You see a flower, you want to pick it. You see a nice meal, you eat it. You see a woman, well... You see a little child, you don't know what to do, you try mingling, making weird sounds at it and try to make it laugh. And in music. I am a high degree listener. And most of the time I listened to those great great people, I didn't know what to do. I felt like applausing, kissing them and etc. But afterwards, I had that urge in me. I had to play the bass.
Furthermore, visual arts has become a profession for me. And you can't easily have fun while making money. So I switched to something else to make me happy where no one will meddle into my business. And no I don't want to be a part of a band professionally.
Since I cant choose two things I put other...for fun and in a band (well kinda...we still need a drummer :/)
1. Because I can. 2. Job (band) security. Bass is sure a lot more popular in recent years. 3. Just for the hell of it.
