Hello I am about to pick up a Aguilar DB728 tube amp and DB659 tube pre and wondered besides the extra 100 watts the amp puts outis this basically gonna be the same tone as the aguilar db359? the pre amp section looks identicle on both and the 359 and 728 are both all tube power too. Anyone have any first hand experience with these, any opinions would really be appreciated thanks! Jon
i've got the 359 and the 728, but no 659. the 359's actually pretty smooth. not as grunty as the more boorish 728, which has extra muscle. but Tombowlus has all three you ask of. he'd know better.
I'm not tom, but I do have a few amps. I have a 359, 728, and the 680. I got the 359 and it is one of the best sounding amps available. Although, the 659 is basically the same I wouldn't say the tone with the 728 is the same but louder. I opted for the 680 instead of the 659 because the 659 IMO is probably closer to an alembic preamp (i.e.fender bassman) than the 359. The 728 is 400 watts and the 359 is 200 watts. The 728 is a monster power amp. 400 watts is chest pounding power in a tube amp! The 659 is still a great sounding amp (I'm planning one getting one soon). I would probably put it with a solid state power amp. This would sound great! Just yesterday, I played one of the new fender monoblock 1200 amps with the pre and the fender pre going thru a Berg 215 or a 610 (I'm the resident equipment tester for one of the local music stores!)/ VERY NICE! The higher power sounded better than the 728 with the 659
