We see artificially road-worn basses all of the time so my memory of famous guys playing genuinely time-worn basses has been all but erased. I'm really interested in pics of ANY working bassists playing their naturally worn-in basses pre-1990, before the relicing phenomenon really clouded the waters of genuine vs. relic. I'm not denying that pics of dozens of famous players playing their prized aged workhorse exist in vast numbers but my quick google search yielded mostly mint to great condition basses being played and I can only vaguely recall pics of maybe Jaco or Sting with a kinda beat up bass (albeit hand-removed frets, right? And who knows what else done). So, please post all such pics here!
Here's my favorite, but unfortuately, it's not mine. A Fellow TBer built a Tribute of John Wetton's roadworn, stripped and lacquered King Crimson-Era P-Bass, which is remarkably identical to the original. He also has a YouTube video of him playing it. It absolutely nails the sound of Wetton's P-Bass too.
The late Paul Goddard (Atlanta Rhythm Section, Roy Orbison's Candymen, Classics IV, etc.) playing his 1957 Precision in 1974, before he switched to the Rick 4001. Then and now - I bought it from Paul back in 1980.
Yeah, Mike Watt! First thing that popped into my head. Here's a slightly better picture, although this one probably belongs in the locked thread, "What's that in the background?": This one shows the wear better.
