If my band records a song - a cover of some well known song - and we want to post it on our facebook page as a sample of what we do, are we breaking rules? Are there copyright issues or royalty issues? Hope this is not a dumb question or in the wrong place. thanks

I don't think so. Copyright issues arise only if you use the original recording in your video. And that has been changing since most (if not all) record companies agreed to put a link to buy the song you are playing in your YouTube video.

Don't have a problem but sometime a song got restriction in some country but 90% of the time I didn't have a problem.
