    Hi all,
    I'm looking for options for replacement of the push/pull stacked volume/pan control on my '87 Streamer 001 Body close.jpg ;
which is now bassically unplayable as it is so scratchy when pulled up and doesn't work at all when pushed in. De-Oxit has not done much after a few treatments.
MEC 88001-A4 stackable volume blend pot.jpg (sorry for phone quality photos)
I don't think that it's an original part to the bass and I think I may I've found a MEC replacement online (for over $90) however I think my wife would prefer I spend less than that...
I'm a newb to this repair end of things and am not sure if any different model would be compatible with the existing MEC pots and EMG pickups or is an entire new wiring harness recommended?
Also not sure of the rating I need to look for (500K, 25K etc) as its not visible (to me) on this pot; the bass, mids and treble pots on this bass appear to have 100K? stamped on them...
    Any guidance is greatly appreciated...
    Cheers!

A little further digging and it appears it is a 'B500K concentric triple deck volume/blend pot'...sooo, will any make of 500K triple deck Vol/Blend pot work with the existing MEC pots or would it be easier and cheaper to change out all the pots/wiring at once with a new solderless set?
Just looking for some other perspectives or angles of thought on this...
    Cheers!

The alpha pot is just a push/pull pot, no blend. And AFAIK, that Warwick pot is the one and only part out there for a replacement.

    Thanks for the reply.
Yes, the more I look the more it seems that there is but one replacement option, now I guess it's time to try to find the least expensive source...

So, I've found it a couple of places for about $75(Can) + shipping...i thought before I pull the trigger on this part I should at least ask...
{1} any leads on a less expensive source?
{2} is it advisable to change only the one pot vs changing the entire wiring assembly?
{3} is there a chance it could be something else like the EQ or a bad P'up?
Obviously I don't want to spend money needlessly.
    Any guidance is greatly appreciated...
    Cheers!

Well, I took the bass over to our jam last night to get some more help to try and figure out some stuff or narrow down some possibilities...still scratchy in the 'up' position (the kind of scratchy I have fixed with DeOxit spray on other amp pots before but not this one); in the 'in' position there is only sporadic sound when strings are plucked and it is all heavy buzzy!
So after this latest bit of visual and sonic information gathering and after it being suggested by others; I am now thinking it may be the preamp???
Sound plausible? I've been informed that "When pushed in, the electronics are active."

This seems like a pretty good deal & more importantly a pretty straight forward fix...

Unless I'm missing something (I'm prone to that btw) if I changed that out I can't imagine still having any issue and if I did it would have to be with the EMG pick ups (new in 2006?) but I dont get that impression...
Am I on the right track?
    Solderless connections OK?
I wish taking it to a tech was less an issue and that I knew more but hey it's all a learning process...
Thanks for any help you can provide...
    Cheers!

  7. I would look into Bourns pots. They make an enclosed pot similar to MEC and are much less expensive (and probably 10x better). I laughed when I saw the pricing of the MEC pots. They look identical to the pots found in Joyo pedals ($30 per pedal).

First, disconnect the signal wire from the vol pot (to preamp) and jumper the vol pot to the jack. If the signal is clean, it's the preamp or batt or batt leads.

If the signal is Not clean, disconnect the pickup wires from the balance pot and run them straight to the jack- then, you'll know if the pickups are ok, or not.

If the signal from the pickups is clean, the pots are bad. If the signal is not good, separate the pickups and run them each to the jack to isolate the problem.

Those are 3 wafer vol/blend pots?

  10. You'd have to check the Bourns catalogue. There has to be another suitable one out there that doesn't fetch $90 on the low end. If not, then I suppose MEC can get whatever they want to charge. I'm trying to find the Mouser listings and I am the worst at navigating their inventory.
