    when I want a tone and 2 volume knobs, on a passive J/P bass
    do I need 2B's and a A? of 3 B's?

    I'm talking about lineair and logarithmic potentiometers

    Obviously, you use audio taper pots for the volume controls.
    As to the tone controls, it's personal preference - it'll work either way. I find the passive tone sweep a little smoother with liner taper.

    A = audio taper (log)
    B = linear taper

    So to answer your question, 2 A's and a B. Or 3 A's.
