Anyone able to tell me on a passive jazz bass that I have it has 500k pots and they need to be replaced (2 are stiff and scratchy and 1 is broken off). My inquiry is this. I have 3 new ones but 2 are 500k and 1 is 250k. Will this work? What are the results of the mismatch values? If it does work how should it be configured? Volume 500k's and tone 250k? Thanks.
It's all personal preference. Some like 250k pots, and others like 500ks for more output/treble. Mixing pot values puts the total output impedance somewhere in between. Two 500k volumes is 250k, and two 250k volumes is 125k, while a 500k and 250k is 166.67k. Or you could use the 250k pot for the tone control, for the equivalent of a 500k tone rolled about a fifth of the way down.
So both volumes use the 500k and tone use the 250k rolled about a 1/5 down and that will subsequently even it all out?
