Power Amps: Do they have to be bass-specific?

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by bigcardinal, Apr 6, 2006.

  1. ...just wondering because the bass-specific ones are A LOT pricier than general use/p.a. ones. With a good bass pre-amplifier and through decent speakers, will the difference REALLY be noticeable?

On a similar note: with a good bass pre-amp, how good will the bass sound through decent P.A. cabinets?

(assume with all this that these scenarios are being judged against the same good bass and good preamp, and that the only differences are the power amps and/or cabinets). Thanks

Plenty of info on this exact issue already around the forums, you'll find that MOST who use separate pre and power units use "regular" PA power amps like the Crest CA9 and the QSC PLX series. You'll also read that some can notice a difference between the way the CA9 handles the lower frequencies over the PLX's.

No need for me to rehash all of the varying observances and opinions here, do a search and there's tons of discussion there already.

No, you don't need a bass specific POWER AMP, but if you buy an amp "head" (pre + power amp combined) you should use a "bass head".

When shopping for power amps be wary of a great deal like "800w amp, $239!!!" something might be wrong there if its new. some DJ amp companies screw with the numbers too much when it should really say "800w @1khz 10% distortion!!!" (which would sound horrible) and probably only has 150w of reasonable clean power!

no, not a bass specific power amp.

This is a bit of a grey area...some like the sound of bass guitar through p.a. speakers others might find the sound not heavy enough. Thats been my experience.
