is there any difference between a power amp for bass and one for guitar, other than the number of tubes in a guitar head (it seems)? i just can't seem to find a good used bass power amp anywhere.

A serious lack of power. Most Guitar power amps run in between 100 and 200 watts.

Get a regular PA power amp, I.E. Carvin, QSC, Mackie, Crown, ect. They work great, and have the power that basses need.

I myself use a Carvin DCM1000, which puts out 1000 watts into 4 ohms, and it works perfect.
