At a gig last night the outlets where not grounded. So the two guitars had that "hum". The owner of the bar said that most of the bands that play there bring in a "power box" that is on fifty or so feet of wire with eight plugs on it. They pull it right out of the main power box. This all sounds very cool-is it? and how does it hook up and how hard is this to make? can you buy them? thanks to all who help!

  2. He's talking about a power distribution box. Basically, it's like a miniature version of the electrical panel in your house. The basic idea is that you tap into a high current 220V breaker (50A typically) on the club's main panel, then run a heavy cable (at least 8AWG for 50A) from there to the panel on your box. The panel on the distribution box splits it up into a bunch of regular 120V circuits.

Most bars have an extra breaker in their panel for this or even have a range plug you can use. If they don't, it has to be hardwired to the main panel. This can be tricky and needs to be done by an electrician to be strictly legal in most places. You shouldn't attempt it unless you're comfortable working around electricity. The panels aren't difficult to build if you know what you're doing. You need a small breaker panel, some breakers, a bunch of wire and the right tools. If you don't or aren't comfortable working around electricity, any pro-audio rental place should be able to put you on the right track to getting one built. Also, any electrician could do it. If you do get one, make sure it's approved by an electrician to avoid any possible liability problems. Having one would certainly help you get clean power on stage....
    Hope this was somewhat helpful....:bassist:
