poweramp preamp set up.

Discussion in 'Amps and Cabs [BG]' started by iamlowsound, Apr 15, 2006.

  1. Hey, I am looking at getting a pre/power set up instead of a head. I have found the preamp that I want to get, but now I need a good poweramp. Around 300-600w and decently cheep (less than $400). I will be running it through a avatar 2x10 cab.

  2. If you're going with the poweramp, I'd look into used Crown amps. They are worth the money, and extra watts never hurt.

I'd advise against buying the "best value" amps. You never know what could go wrong with a bad amp.

The XLS 202 is underpowered for bass, IMO. Is your Avvie 4 or 8 ohms?

  4. I haven't bought one yet, but I'll be going with a 8 ohm so I can add on another cab sometime.

Check this chart out. The 402 would be a better choice.

    Power Output (1 kHz*)
    Stereo Bridge-Mono
    8 Ohm 4 Ohm Bridged 8 Ohm
    XLS 802 500W 800W 1600W
    XLS 602 380W 600W 1200W
    XLS 402 300W 450W 900W
    XLS 202 200W 300W 600W

That's the specs on Crown's site. I don't think the 402 is much more $$$. 200W a side in mono, I think 300 is a bare minimum for me. You might disagree, and that's OK, but I like the extra headroom, plus you'll have more power down the road when you expand your cab selection.

The other thing I don't like is that it only bridges into 8 ohms...

  6. I would be buying off of ebay so I get a better deal. I am buying on an extreamly tight budget. I'll see if I can find a 402, thanks for the help man.

I bought a used Crown Macro Tech 1200 off of E-Bay for around $400 last year. This amp sounds great for bass and I would recommend it highly.

I use mine bridged in mono driving an EA NL-210 cabinet and I use a SansAmp RBI for the preamp and nothing else, I'm very pleased with the tone and it's simple and reliable.
