Recently came to the realization that a preamp into a powered PA speaker makes a lot of sense for me. What else should I be looking at for the powered speaker other than the new(ish) QSC K12.2?

I was looking at EV for sure, but they have such a plethora of models, I didn't know where to start.

I'd like to stay under $800 per speaker new or used. I may need two. I currently run 2 x 15's.

What's your current amp? Does it have preamp or line out?

    Current preamp is a Mesa D800 preamp/DI.

The Alto TS speaker line are a fantastic value and are much lighter weight than the QSC's. I'm not saying they are quite as good, but their cost are a fraction of the QSC's and they come fairly close in sound.

So maybe Alto TS212 as the budget solution, EV (insert whichever model here) as the mid level and the QSC's as the slightly higher?

This is highly interesting to me. I might be willing to experiment for 3 bills. Do you have any experience of how they behave as a bass cabinet?

I have 2 Alto TS212's. Great speakers for the money. But honestly, I wouldn't use them (or any powered PA speaker) as a bass rig. Only in a pinch. I'd much rather use a powered bass speaker rig. Or a micro amp and a small cab.

Not trying to be snarky here, but....why?

    - Unless it's a small/quiet venue, the audience doesn't generally hear the bass cab anyway.
    - What makes a PA cab terribly different from a boutique "flat response" style cab?
    - What example of a powered bass cab do you have in mind other thank GK?
    - Micro head and small cab doesn't cut in a rock setting with a gorilla for a drummer.

I'm thinking of snagging a TS 215 for this application and giving it a test run. If it sounds good and is loud enough I'll happy lug it around whenever I don't need my full stack.

  19. I would look at an EV ELX-115P.

What's the ELX got going for it over the ZLX?
