I'm trying to find this sound... http://youtu.be/qIY0IddUfC8

I've got an overdrive pedal already and don't want to spend a fortune on some huge setup, just looking for the right distortion or fuzz pedal. I just tried the Boss MT-2 but didn't like how it cut out the low ends. I think I'm looking for a pedal made specific for basses rather than a guitar pedal so I can have a fuller sound, plus our band is just drum and bass so we want the full sound. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you want a fuzz pedal. Have a fun trip down the rabbit hole.

Try find an old DOD FX59 Thrash Master. It is pink. Woeful on guitar but a real tectonic plate shaker on bass.

    Powerviolence?

What happened to just calling it metal?

  7. I would suggest a Rat Tail into a TAFM. Or at least one or the other, but the clean blend of the TAFM makes it for a great pedal after a Rat Tail, which will just thicken the crap out of your sound all together. I play that through one rig while a Bluebeard trough another, both simultaneously. Gets pretty crazy and thick while still articulate and clear to hear notes.

I've checked out the Rat Tail and Rat King. So far those are my favorite pedals I've found. I also kind of like the MXR Blowtorch, at least for the price.

I found some videos for this pedal, seems epic. But i cant tell from the videos if it cuts too much of the lows out. I'm concerned about it as the pedal was designed for guitar. Do you have experience with it? Does it hold up the lows alright?

Not that I'm a fan of it anymore, but I listened to powerviolence a lot in college. It's been around for a very long time. Here's some info here: http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Powerviolence.

Interesting article. I've been familiar with the term but I would mostly call it thrash or grind. Rorschach, Man is the Bastard and Spazz were all bands I really liked but didn't realize they fell into a different sub genre. You learn something new everyday.
As far as the OP's request. I would get a RatTail. It slices through the mix nicely and sounds raw. Some other flavors of dirt I would consider stacking. The Malekko B:AssMaster. Dwarfcraft BabyThundaa. Black Arts Pharaoh. Fuzzrocious Heliotropic. Darkglass B3K. These all have different vibes but would work, depending on what bass and amp you are using and the tone you are looking to cop. They would be my first pics if I were to play in a band like that. In fact, I tried them all in my punk band. But most of them were just too much. Good luck.

Just about any fuzz pedal with a built-in blend knob will work. Or you can get a Blend pedal of some sort and get any fuzz pedal you want. Then you can keep the low end and definition of your bass tone with the fuzz.

Ive seen a guy use the EHX metal muff for this actually, odd choice. Id try a Rat Tail and turn it up way loud.

  17. A Boss ODB -3 or Boss HM-2 will both get you there cheap. I have used both in a hardcore / D beat punk band.

    Check us out here:

    I'm using a Fender P Bass, Boss ODB 3, Ibanez bass chorus, GK 700RBmkII, & Ampeg 810.

At the 5 minute to 5:30 mark and the 8 minute to around 8:30 mark. You can get an idea of the live fuzz tone he goes for.
