I'm off of work. I've already had more than an hour to practice, and I've got a ton of interesting things to work on.
    Today, practice is a joy.

Wishing you all joy this season and onward.

Hold on to that feeling. Practice should always be a joy.

You know, it's remarkable - the additional practice (and more than that, additional focus in my practice) has had a noticeable impact on the quality of my playing.
Without buying any new gear! Treason?

To me, the key is playing every day - even if you only pick the bass up for ten minutes.

I've been working on building my vocabulary. I never bothered much practicing to play fast, and it's fun to do that just now.
I don't like stuff that "sounds like scales" or "sounds like exercises". So I put this together last night - combination of alternating thirds with scale tones. MuScore is a handy tool for transcribing.
Practicing it and getting it up to speed.

I'm also working on some Maceo Parker grooves and African grooves. Plus going over material for a show on Monday.
Oh, and a Charlie Parker riff from Billie's Bounce.
    Feels good.

Bringing this thread up today. Life has not been super easy lately (family health issues, and lots of caregiver responsibilities) but today practice feels really good, and I feel much better for it.

  11. I like the way you think.

I am keeping a notebook listing what I practiced and what I have discovered (on top of my excel list of songs to practice).

Last two days I didn't do repertoire and instead studied pentatonic scales and some Bach. You would think after playing pentatonics for 50 years, you would have had it all figured out.

I wouldn't begin to think that :D - still so much to learn, even with "basics".

I’ve been recording my with my band and tracking all my parts at home. This time around I decided to double track all my parts. It’s been a wonderful challenge of simplifying to the point of being able to remember EVERY note and nuance and then playing it again with the existing track.

  14. Practicing on three basses lately, D Standard, C Standard, & one in A447 for an old Dennis Dunaway song with Alice Cooper.
Rotating between the three keeps me from getting bored.

  15. My Beatle bass is tuned at Eb. When i surf youtube, I will alternate basses to force me to learn alternate fingerings
