I've seen quite a few videos on-line recently where practice bass sitting down. This seems strange to me, for even when I practice alone I tend to stand rather than sit. So I thought this would be the obvious place to check if one way of practicing is favored. Hence, I've created a poll. The question is when you are practicing alone do you sit, stand or evenly sit or stand?
I sit or stand or sometimes lie in bed. To me it doesn't make a lot of difference because it is the practising that is important, not how I do it. The only time I will sometimes stand rather than sit is if I have to sing at the same time, and then only if I really have to "give it some" as it is very difficult to give it your all sitting down.
Most of my practice time is learning songs. I stand and sit evenly. If I am making a chart, or clicking around on the computer to go back a few bars or so I'm sitting. But I can't sing worth a crap sitting. And I sing at least backups on almost all the songs I do. So once I get to the words I'm standing.
When I'm first working on a song, I'll sit until I have it, then play it standing up to be sure I do got it. It's just easier to run the tools I use at my computer while sitting.
When I play alone I sit down 80% of the time. When I’m working on something new and need to sing as well I stand.
I used to stand back when I was working on my stage game but now that I can be comfortable playing in different positions I tend to sit (with good posture) on a drum throne.
I don't practice too often. But when I do, I'm sitting down reading a chart or playing along with a file on a disk or computer with the device within easy reach.
When practicing something to play it live, i’ll stand. When practicing something to get it tight for recording, I’ll sit.
When my band practices, everyone sits except me ... I hate sitting and prefer to stand. Sometimes it makes others uncomfortable that I'm standing when everyone else is sitting. Maybe it's because I started out playing horns and vocals and you just can't get the same breath support sitting as you can standing.
I never sit while playing. In fact, I sing in a choir too and while we practice most of the time while seated I would prefer to stand the whole time.
It might be worth noting that it's much easier to film yourself playing bass while sitting down. I mostly play standing. I practice not looking at the fretboard when I play and try to stand with good posture.
Practicing alone at home typically involves learning new songs, which is done using my computer. I sit so I have easier access to the computer.
