I recently came across a Paul Reed Smith Gary Grainger GG5 and am quite impressed. The B string and preamp are superb. I mean I’ve owned a ton of basses and this Grainger is up there with the best of them and tops many.

Electronics are quiet and highly versatile. The EQ points are useable across the entire range. The push pull passive/active switching is unique and very easy to use in the fly. Did I mention the B string? Wow! Huge, tight and punchy. I reckon a little better than my Roscoe 35” scale B. Easily go from modern to more wooly tones with adjustments of the pickup volumes and EQ.

And they sure do look good. Ergonomics are superb too. The neck is pretty small allowing for fast fluid playing up and down the neck. Beautiful carved top with binding.

I don’t see much in the way of commentary about these instruments so I thought if I posted this other Grainger owners might chime in and/or post pics. Killer basses for sure! Really impressed.

Anybody else love their PRS Grainger?

  2. I don't believe that PRS ever got the recognition he deserves for creating some amazing basses, and that's going back to the original 80s model which is/was a stellar instrument IMO, but never caught on for whatever reason.

GG series are a true work of art. Not necessarily my cup of tea, but I wouldn't say "no" if I were offered to safeguard one of them...:D

In all my time on Internet forums you’re only the second owner I’ve seen that’s posted one, and the other was posted by some dude on TGP that bought one because he was learning to play bass, so it’s probably in a closet somewhere by now.

    Beautiful! Bet is sounds phenomenal.

I tried a couple of the 3-pickup PRS basses back in the '80s and loved them! I also remember a phenomenal PRS 4 string in the early 2000's with 2 blade pickups.

I played it today and I think I’m trading in my Spector Euro and American jazz toward the 10 top grainger. Looks wise the Spector I think keeps up with it, but the neck and playability is insane! I don’t think it’s been in production very long the newer ones with all the bells and whistles grainger 10s that is. The local shop owner got one that came in kept it and let me play it and just wow it looks great but the neck felt so good played so Easy an tones could do sssooo much.
I loved the 2 9volt spots to get more head room it absolutely works, very great bass. As the shop owner pointed out to me there are a lot of things the PRS keeps up with like in the 10,000 range of really high end basses!

I have a spector euro 5 lx with the darkglasss pre and bart pickup so its not like I havent played with high end stuff but man did PRS knock it out of the park. I also think I am throwin in my american jazz to help get it. That bass you can just tell can do it all. An it plays an feels so incredible. I am still trying to commit it but its only a matter of time lol
