Ampeg SVP-IIP pre-amp XLR out (must use instead of 1/4" out for enough gain) - into a GK MBF800 effects return. I've been using an unbalanced TS cable that has seen better days and need to finish wiring this 2U rack. Should I be using TRS? These cables are much easier to find in shorter lengths as well. Does it even matter? TIA https://ampeg.com/pdf/SVTIIP.pdf https://static1.squarespace.com/sta...0c3eb134/1419972568340/mbfusion800-manual.pdf
There's not enough level out of the unbalanced preamp out jacks? The balanced out is usually lower if it's intended to be used as a DI as well. If the balanced out is transformer driven, it must be a 1/4" TS connector with pin 3 tied to pin 2. If actively driven then to generally doesn't matter.
@agedhorse , Manual indicates a switchable XLR level of -20 dB or 0 dB. Schematic indicates actively driven XLR output. https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://ampeg.com/support/files/Schematics/S%20Series/SVT-IIP%20Pre-Amp/SVT-IIP%20Schematics.pdf&ved=2ahUKEwj5scjAmpjqAhXVFjQIHYmUDrUQFjABegQIAhAB&usg=AOvVaw1mwMfJWqNAkOYn7o0KKO0Y&cshid=1592924671048 - John
The 1/4" outs appear to be about -10dB so using the XLR out in the 0dB position with either a TRS or TS connector should work fine. Pin 3 should be connected to ring on a TRS, and pin 3 should be left open on a TS for best results, though shorting pin 3 to sleeve will still work ok. Avoid connecting pin 2 to ring or sleeve and using pin 3 hot on this design, that will affect performance.
