Hey all, I am selling one of my Pre-EBMM Stingrays. Absolutely no trades offers, please.

    Some details:
    - Sunburst with maple board
    - '83 date in the neck pocket
    - minor wear, some small chips in the body. (I would rate it at around an 8 in condition)
    - minor wear on frets
    - tarnish/minor rust on part of the bridge and the tuners
    - the pre is non-epoxy and all solder joints appear to be original
    - All original except the mute pads have been changed
    - 9.7 lbs on my cheesy kitchen scale
    - includes a period correct black tolex hard case.

And here we go. I forgot just how heavy this case is! All of the latches work. And as you can see, one of the footies is missing on the bottom.

Really nice! My 83' has the circuit board is covered in black goop so as not to see component values.

Please correct me if I am mistaken, from what I recall in '79 the epoxying was discontinued. I think that there is some debate that the epoxy covered pre-amps sound different from the later naked pre-amps...better/worse.

I'll double check mine tonight. I was not the first owner but did buy it between 85'-87'.
I have played a few from this era and they all sounded great. From what I've read, 1983 was the last year of Leo and documentation was not at a strong point. And yes I am jealous, yours is lighter than mine!

It was a very long time ago that I found a sells brochure, for the Stingray, stating that the target weight was 10 pounds. I've always use a padded neoprene strap so weight has never been an issue for me. And the bass is very well balanced.

'83 was the last year that Leo owned the company before selling it to Ernie Ball. So towards the end it seem likely that they might be using up any parts that they have left over. But the quality of this bass is actually great considering when it was built. I also have a '77 and they both sound and play exactly the same. But I am using DR Low Riders on both and I set them up to my preference. One has an ash body and this one is alder but they weigh about the same. This one is much prettier than the '77 and in a lot better shape.

Below is a link to a Youtube video, that I found quite a few years ago, of a tonal comparison between Pre-ebmm vs. a mid 90's Stingray. I feel that this is a credible comparison as I've found the same tonal difference between my bass listed here compared to my mid 90's Stingray. I have both of the basses strung with DR Low Riders whereas I think in the video he was using different strings on his basses.

Man, I wish that could play half as well as this guy!

This thread is killing me :dead: I had a black / maple ‘78 when I was a teenager that I foolishly sold- This sunburst Stingray is bringing back the heartache :D

GLWTS, I’d grab this is I could!

Leo had a falling out with his partners and left MusicMan circa late 1979(the first G&L basses were 1980). MusicMan went bankrupt in '84 and that's when Ernie Ball bought them out. Between Leo and Ernie Ball the MusicMan basses were contracted out and built by Charvel/Jackson. The Charvel/Jackson basses are easy to spot with 4 bolt necks and no string thru bodies.
