I might be in the market for a new bass and I am thinking about picking up a Musicman 4 string Stingray. In my opinion this is a must have bass for any collection along with a good Jazz and P bass, but after years of playing I still don't own one!

I am thinking of finding a pre Ernie Ball vintage....maybe a 1977, but am not sure if the new ones are worth comparing. To my ears the vintage ones I have heard sound more organic and less bright and thin sounding to the new ones. More to my taste.....

Any thoughts on this or which vintage ones to look for or avoid? I have heard that some of them have different preamps and may be more collectable depending on which one....

    Cheers

I really like the current Stingrays, including the Classics, but they do not sound like my 77, which is warmer and more organic.

My favorite Stingray was from the '70s. I don't know if it was an oddball but it had a J sized neck that I had never seen on another Stingray since until I ran across a EBMM Stealth 'Ray with one several months ago at GC.
