Sometimes I get so caught up in the newer stuff I have it's nice to be able to pull this out of the closet and remember what a killer bass it still is. 34" scale, Alder with Padauk top, Maple neck with Padauk stringers. B string hits like a jackhammer. Amazing playability and sound. I ordered this from Mike in 1984. This is one I don't just hand to anybody;)

The impetus for this was someone telling me in store today how great MTD's are (they are great) and how much better they are than older Tobiases.

    Right:D

Brad...I think I speak for less $$$ inclinded bassists worldwide when I say

    YOU SUCK.

Thanks. Two volumes and a toggle, which I prefer. Bartolini preamp with Bass, Mid and Treble. There's no sound if you turn all three down. The pickups are very early Bartolini curved top 5 string pickups with no name on top.

I think I may take it on my next gig:D

Thanks, Brian. Check this one out: my first Tobias, a 78 Walnut and Purpleheart 4. JHD Audio preamp.
These are both serious keepers:). I'm the original owner on both.

... gibby ... toby ... reminds me of Howard Cosell using the diminutive of everyone's name, even if it had never been done in that person's life. Like the old Charger, James Brooks ... "Jamie."

    [Cosell]

So anyway, I MUST SAY, that is one EXquisitely detailed pre-Gibby Toby.

(Cosell)- "It contains a Veritable CornaCopia of Exotic HardWoods yielding a MusiCality unmatched by HumanKind..." I miss that guy, and the T.V. movie didn't really do him justice.

You get bored, you say silly things:)

Perhaps pre-hibby Jibby would be more appropriate:D

  12. Brad, those are some beautiful basses!

    I envy you big time!

Of course, my GAS has flared up, so now I need to find some Maalox or something. :p

Now that I've seen those, my design for my custom has completely changed.

Will do, Brian. Not many people even know what they are. The four is #196, the 5 is #308. I added MTD 635 #29 to the fold this year.

    Thanks, CG.

    BTW I miss Cosell too.

you do have a couple of basses that any collector or player/collector would die for including my self.

Keep opening the closet and finding other great stuff :D
