That used to be my bass! I bought it from the original owner, Mike Hawkins at the old First Bass Denver, who converted to fret less for me. It looks even better than the pics reveal, and sounds amazing! Glad to see it back with a TB’er. Congrats!

s_wood, happy to learn more about the back story on the bass.
It is my first real Tobias and love the sound and playability.
I do wish it was 19mm spacing but for this one I will let that slide...
I bought it off another TB member from Russia and had it shipped back to Los Angeles, back to where it was born.

I'm glad to be one of the Tobias owners!
I bought this pre-Gibson Tobias Classic 5 on November last year and it's been my go to bass since then.

    #897
    - Goncalo alves top on a Walnut body
    - Pau ferro fingerboard
    - flamed Maple and Purple heart 5 pieces neck
    - TCT preamp, Bartolini pickups
    - I think bridge and machine heads are not original. (Schaller, Gotoh)
    - LaBella Strings

    Here are pics.

Beautiful bass @warwickorrior. Reminds about how these old Tobiases put the "Pau Ferro is a meh fingerboard wood" to the lie.

    Hello!
I'm curious about making tone with 2 volume knobs of my Classic 5.
(original TCT Pre and Bartolini pups, strung with new strings.)

Normally, I play with 2 volumes all the way up, but when I try to adjust tone by turning down one of them,
its tone changes dramatically only in just less than a quarter turn, and no significant change seem to occur til I turn it all the way down. I can barely hear any difference during adjusting a volume knob in the rest of turn :(
I tested one by one while the other completely turned off, and I can hear volume change as I dial each knob.

I'm just wondering, that little or no change occurs after a quarter turn with the other knob all the way up is normal in Classic 5, or something's wrong with my bass.
    Any opinion...?

  10. This sounds completely normal to me. Once you duck one pickup out of the mix—even if only slightly—the tonal characteristics of the dominant pickup take over. Compare this to a blend knob, which tapers one up as it tapers the other one down.

It’s easy enough to test though. Turn both volumes off, then one at a time, slowly increase volume to 100%. Listen to the taper of each. They should be linear (consistent boost/cut throughout its ranges). If they aren’t, download the wiring diagrams from Bartolini.net, and verify.

Thank you for your advice! @dreamadream99

I compared my bass to other basses which use 2 volumes and blend knob, and actually learned a lot.

    Hey All,

I just purchased this Gem. Exact year I'm not sure but I believe 1991. I'll see if I can ask Mike

    1991 Tobias Classic 6
    Walnut Body
    Goncalo Alves Top
    Maple Tone Plate
    Original Hardware
    Original Case
    Original Bart Pups
Jim Williams Audio Upgrades Pre-Amp (Sounds Killer)
Was originally fretted, turned into a fretless then refretted again. Fretwork is flawless
    Looks, plays and sounds killer.

This bass was owned by Kim Stone of the Rippingtons. Used on multi recordings and live shows. Kim is the one who had the jim Williams Pre put in. He did that to alot of his basses including his Roscoes. Very open and full sounding. Just got it last week.

    Very, very nice!
To me, Mike's Tobiases are like the Jaguar E-series car - not the newest but still the sexiest.

To all - I'm on a long-term search for a particular Tobias Bassic 5 - trans red over quilted maple, black HW, serial number in the low 700's.
It was built by Mike and team for me back in '88 or '89, and I had to sell it when we had our kid 20+ years ago.
If you have it (or know the person who does) and are enjoying it, let me know that it's in good hands (and keep me in mind if you ever decide to part with it).

Hey Fellow Tobias Heads, got some Truss Rod questions:

I have just a couple questions about the double truss rod in the older Tobias Basses.

1.) Its always been my understanding that when adjusting the neck you should tighten or loosen each rod the same, so if you want less relief tighten the Bass side rod a 1/4 turn and the treble side rod a 1/4 turn, more relief, loosen each rod a 1/4 turn, or untill desired effect. this is the proper procedure on these older rods, correct?

2.) I currently own 2 Older Tobias basses, #76X Red Basic 5 and #17XX, a Classic 6 String owned once by Kim Stone of The Rippingtons. The Classic 6 has a little more neck relief than I like. If the procedure above for the double rods is correct then the rods are a little close to being pretty tight. Is there a way/procedure to "reset the rods/Neck" so the rods have a little more effect. I know they work cause when I loosened them the relief increased and got better as tightened but still too much relief.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be much appreciated!

    Thanks again,
