I'm really surprised this hasn't sold. Very cool bass here and probably very well built. It's an interesting piece of history too.

Interesting piece. I wasn't aware that Tobias contracted production in Japan. I'm sure someone will grab this one soon.

I have one of these!, great bass!, technically not pre-Gibson , as Gibson purchased Tobias while this deal was on going. That said Gibson had nothing to do with these.
Mike is on record as saying that these were some of the finest basses to come out of Burbank. I think there are maybe 100-150 of these made before the Yen to dollar rate killed the deal. I think originally they were around 2k, Original Tobias Bart circuit. I would let mine go under $1,500.00 great bass!!!

Wow that's a great price for a really sweet looking bass. Never tried or heard how Tobias bass sounds. Do they differ a lot from MTD?

I personally like the older tobias basses better than the new mtd stuff....not that those aren’t really nice instruments- I just kind of think the original ergonomics liken others of this era (Spector, pedulla, etc) were really thought out well and part of the “golden age” of bass design- these were there budget line at the time- but SO much better than the recent Gibson USA Tobias basses I’ve played... the MTD basses certainly have no quality issues but as mentioned im partial to the old tobias design
