Pre-Gibson Tobias

Discussion in 'Basses [BG]' started by Brad Johnson, Jan 14, 2003.

  1. I walked in a store today to see a guy sell a very clean Mahogany with Maple top pre-Gibson 5 string to a store... for $1000.

I don't know what to say... just thought I'd share;)
  2. ... I thought you were going to tell us that you bought one for something like $150.

So that we could, once again, hate you.

    ;) :D

  3. Nah, it's just hard to believe someone could own a bass like that and have no idea of it's value. He was very happy with the $1000. Woo hoo.

I had to pay $500 for my first one... twenty-some years ago:D
  4. Ever own/play a Growler?

    Wha'd ya think of it?

  5. Nice basses

Ahh...I remember back in June, I went into a local store where they had a pre-Gibson Tobias 6er. I didn't like the neck, but when the guy behind the counter told me $750 I was sold. I should have laid down the $300 had on me right then as a deposit, getting him to right it up ASAP, but instead I stepped outside to call and check my available funds. Dammet. When I walked back in the owner came from the back and said the sales guy was wrong. It was supposed to be $2250. The thought of missing that one still brings a tear to my eye. :(
  7. Ouch. On the bright side, at least you didn't help get him fired;)

brad, are you aware that Chuck's has 3 "new" pre- Gibson Tobias' in stock ?

they were pushing pretty hard to get me to buy one over the phone the other day !

I guess they dug them out of the basement.
    If I hadn't just ordered 3 basses i probably would've jumped.
  10. You know, someone else told me that last week. It was pretty hard to believe... Chuck's wasn't a Tobias dealer Pre-Gibson AFAIK. Guess I'll have to check it out.

i had some newbie on the phone, paul was who knows where. The ONLY thing this guy knew about the bass dept. was these three
Tobias'... he knew them by heart.

Can you imagine the stuff that you might find if you looked around downstairs in that place ?
  12. Paul's not a newbie... he's been there forever.

Well, did you buy it??? Pics please!
  14. No, I didn't buy it. The people who did buy it want what it's actually worth. Nothing wrong with that but that's not exactly my cup of tea;)

I obtained a 5 string pre gibson tobias growler in a trade. My singer was talking to a guy he works with and he mentioned I had a (check, checz?) spector to the guy. Somehow I mentioned I was looking to get rid of the Spector and my singer mentioned it to him. he was very interested but had no money so he asked my singer if I was interested in a trade. We switched basses for a try out and out comes the growler. We traded even up. No cash exchanged.

I just thought I would share the story.

I'm not sure, but I though the Growler was a Gibson instrument - to me the only pre-Gibson Tobias basses are the ones that have no names and are just Tobias - Classic, Signature ?

Anyway the real check is the serial number - under 2044 and it's pre-Gibson - higher and it's not!

Interesting I was told by a friend of mine that it was a pre gibson maybe he said growler type.

I will check the serial number as soon as I get home. Imagine all these years thinking I got a deal.
Well I guess I still did. I love this bass.

I will let you know tonight.
  20. Growler owners -

Do these basses have much heavy low end in their tone?

I mean that 'big fat funky booty' sound?

How about high end - are they a bit dark, bright, or music-man like?

I've never played one, and always wondered.
