Preamp in front of a head?

I have an EA iAmp 350 & a SWR IOD.

The IOD seems to sound better when not connected through the effects loop of the EA.

Is there a downside to connecting a preamp in front of a head (i.e. a preamp before a preamp :in this case bass ->IOD -> iAmp ?)

    Any damage to the head?

I know of a fellow running a Demeter in front of a Peavey T-Max head, no problems.

It depends on what you want to achieve.

If you want to use both preamps, either put the IOD in the FX loop or in front of the EA.

If you only use the EQ of the IOD, you can bypass the EA preamp by plugging the IOD into the FX return of the EA. Plug your bass into the IOD.

Now the IOD is the sole preamp and you only use the EA's poweramp.
