Preferred cabs/cabs you hate

  1. Well an arguement was almost held in a recent thread about 8x10s, I thought I'd find out what everyone prefers in a speaker cab and what they hate.

    Hell, through in heads too.

    cabs I like;
    2x15s or two 1x15s w/horn.
    2 or 3x10s.

    cabs I hate;
    8x10s.
    1x20s (what the).

    Heads?
    I dislike Peavey heads, don't like the "sterile" tone, however I do like their 210,410 and 412. Don't like the solid state low wattage ampeg heads, again, sterile.
    I do like heads with tube preamps/solid state (high power) power amps. Don't really like all tube amps, too heavy, don't really like that "fat" tube drive sound.
    Cabs, I like alot of different cabs. I don't care for 810s or 215s, too big. 210s are probably my favorite, and those 310s coming out seem like they would be pretty good.
    I pretty much like my gear compact.

    Until I purchased a Peavy 412...the only cab I cared for was a single 15" (or two single 15" cabs).

    I despise 10" speakers, in any combination. Too thin sounding for my taste. 18" are nice for some some deep low-end but not much else whereas 15" give a warm, full and clean sound.

    But back to my 412. That is the best compromise between speaker size and full sound. I like a deep, punch in the chest combined with nice clarity...and until I got the 412, I never found a cab that handled both equally well.

  4. I played through two Eden 2x12xlt's this summer...best combo i have ever heard. Lots of bottom...clear sound and very punchy. 12's rock. I bet the Peavey 4x12 is similar in sound.

    I've never played through Eden 2X12's (as I can't afford it...and no one sells them around here).

    But I've just never been a fan of 210's or 410's (lots to choose from...disliked them all).

    I like 15's but with my low B string they seemed to handle it but lack definition.

    The Peavey 412 has everything I want in a cab (except it weighs as much as my car...thank God it's got casters!). Before anyone starts dissing Peavey...let me tell you that there is a huge difference between the Peavey of old and their new gear. I know, I've been around Peavey gear my whole life (20+ years playing). I've tried them all and sometimes went with another company's product.

    But they are making some fantastic gear now...and as usual their price is fair, unlike some brands that charge an unbelievable price for an extremely subtle advantage in performance.

    I highly recommend everyone at least try the 412...some will not like it, but the 12's really handle bass much better than 10's, yet are far cleaner than 15's. I've also found that it takes 4-12's to sound good, not 2-12's (but you were playing through two 2-12's). It does make a difference. Don't compare some 2-12 cabinet to say, an 8X10. You need to try the 412 for comparison.

    I see this thread isn't meant to be brand specific, but rather what configuration you like, but I might have to use brand names since I like certain combinations from certain brands.

    I don't like 15's by themselves for bass. My carvin V115 is the only single 15 I could tolerate like that, but I don't use it that way. It goes with my V410T.

    15's with 4x10's can be very cool. That's what I have

    18's with 4x10's ditto. That's probably what I'm getting next.

    8x10's or two 4x10's are very hard to beat. I love the ampeg 8x10, and I am NOT an ampeg fan.

    The SWR Goliath Senior 6x10 is one of my all-time favorite cabinets. I wish Carvin would build one like that. I don't, however like the ampeg 6x10.

    Eden 4x10 with the single port on bottom is also one of my favorites, but the Eden 2x10 with the two ports, one on top, and one on bottom, absolutely sucks!!.

    SWR Megoliath with an Ampeg SVT-4PRO RULES!!! Great bass for a 5-string and HIGH DEFINITION!!!!!!! NO QUESTIONS!!!!!

  9. Sundogue, you are very right about the 4x12 thing. I tried forever to get a great bass sound from the single cab w/ 2x12's to no avail. Once I combined two Edens it was a very different story. The two cabs together seemed to equal MORE than the sum of their parts. Anyone have another Eden 2x12xlt they want to sell me...?

    What about a 20X6X9 cabinet. I'm talking, like, 20 of those car stereo 6X9 speakers. Talk about mids and high end!!!!!!!!!!! Of course, your low end would be non-exsistent, but hey, thats the price you have to pay for being cool.
