Prevent dead spots in a replacement neck

  1. Is there a way to prevent dead spots in a new neck made to replace one with dead spots, provided that the materials and dimensions are roughly the same, graphite rods are not used, and mass is not added to the headstock on order to preserve balance?

    The only way to remove deadspots is to make a headless bass. You could use a graphite neck which is less prone but that bass will have a deadspot.

    IMO, there really are no proactive solutions to dead spots, only reactive ones. Hard to prevent something until you know you have it, and where.

    Sure, there are plenty of ways to build a neck to eliminate or minimize dead spots. Basically, you need to shift the natural resonance frequency of the neck up above the notes that are played on the fingerboard. This can be done by increasing the stiffness of the neck, or increasing the mass/inertia, or adding internal damping. Or, a combination of all three.

    Increasing the stiffness can be done by using multi-laminate construction, harder woods, adding internal reinforcement bars or strips, better truss rod design, etc. Mass can be increased with heavier tuners, adding metal to the headstock, or metal bars inside the neck. Some builders add internal damping by adding slugs of rubbery material inside the neck.

    If you are trying to keep the same approximate dimensions, wood, and weight as the existing neck, then your best approach will probably be multi-laminate construction, plus some light weight internal reinforcement. For example, make it 3-piece or 5-piece maple, with a better truss rod installation and internal aluminum reinforcing strips.

    There are many ways to get there, which don't involve carbon fiber or cutting off the headstock.
