Folks, up for sale is this 1997 Fender "California Series" Precision Bass Special.

The bass: Super clean sunburst finish, gold anodized pickguard, maple fingerboard with almost zero fret wear. EXC++. (Maybe even 'Near Mint' although I'm generally suspicious of that term.) I bought this bass off CL 5 years ago, and the guy had bought it new in '97, took 2 lessons, and then put it in a closet until I showed up to buy it. It has one small finish crack about 1/2" long near the jack plate (see photo) and that's all. There are no other scratches or blemishes on the finish or on the neck anywhere. I had a Hipshot D-tuner on the E string tuner which required drilling a couple small holes in the back of the headstock. The original Fender tuner is back on; two of the holes are visible and have been filled.

An oddball to be sure: P-bass body, J-bass neck, pickups from both models, P-bass knobs, typical Fender bridge & tuners. Vol/Vol/Tone, thru bridge stringing. All electronics were upgraded: Seymour Duncan Basslines Quarter-Pound pickups (ballsy as hell), new pots, new jack. The original Fender pickups are included in the sale. (FWIW they were potted by a local guitar guru.)

Aside from being pretty, this a great player. It's been my backup for a few years and every time I've used it on a gig has been very pleasurable in terms of feel and tone.

The history (if you've hung around talkbass for a minute you may have heard this story...): in 1997 Fender was between factories. One in California, one in Mexico, neither producing at full capacity. For about 6 months, guitars were made in both places and were known as the California Series. I'm not clear on who did what, where, but I will tell you that this bass holds its own with the late 90s American Series Fenders (I know this because I have one of those too). If anyone has anything to add to this little history lesson chime in.

$950 shipped to CONUS, includes the Fender gig bag it came with. PM me if you're interested or have questions.
