    Hey all,

I'm getting ready to buy some new strings for my 5 string....and I noticed that the price on Fat Beams has dropped significantly. Not that I'm wanting to look a gift horse in the mouth...but does anyone know why?

I was shocked that they are about half of what I paid 6 months ago....that just means I can buy two sets now right?

The "DR Marcus Miller Signature Set aka Fat-Beams" will be changing after the new year. The strings them selves will be re-branded under "DR Fat-Beams" with new packaging, a different part number, and new pricing. Dealers seem to be "blowing out" the current packaged "DR Marcus Miller Signature Set" while the new "DR Fat-Beams" are expected to have a price closer to Hi-Beams once they are officially announced.

Is anything about them other than the package changing?

That is up to you. They are not going away, and pricing will be different after the new year...

    None. At all.
Looks like the DR contract with Marcus ended.

Just looked at the DR website and not only have the packages of Fat Beams changed but Marcus Miller isn't even listed as a DR endorser anymore. SLaPiNFuNK, is this true?

Yeah, I saw that but I figured that Marcus was still an endorser, just without the pic on the package. He's used both Hi-Beams and Fat-Beams for years. Kinda surprises me.

Probably did like Wooten and went with whoever ponied up more money! I think I saw he's leaving Fender as well.

He also uses the DR Flatwounds.

New part numbers have been released and the DR "Fat-Beams" will start shipping soon. Same strings, different packaging, new pricing!

It's still surprising that he has even been removed from their list of endorsing artists too which leads me to believe he doesn't use them anymore. He's probably been the most well know DR endorser they have ever had.

Spoke with a DR rep today. Marcus Miller has left DR strings after 20 YEARS! He almost told me which string company Marcus is endorsing now (said it will be known at NAMM). He stated that they received word from Marcus that as of January 1st he would no longer be associated with DR strings and to remove his pic from the packs. The lower prices for the non Marcus Fat Beams is because DR had to compensate Marcus for his mug and name being on the packs. As a side note, the thread about the ugly colored ball ends of so many other brands of strings caused me to ask if DR were going that route as well. The answer was a strong "NO".

Yeah, it's all business. Marcus has a new non-Fender signature bass too. Supposed to be more affordable than the Fender.

I like Marcus but that wasn't why I tried Fat Beams several years ago. And since I'm perfectly happy with them I'll continue to use them. I just got some sets in the new packaging and have experienced no difference from previous sets.

I've seen quite a few people talking about the new Dunlop strings. After having a friend let me check out a set on his bass it just reinforced why I like Fat Beams. Still love their straplocks though.

You should try the Super Brights on YOUR bass, Brad. Not sure if they are what you're looking for, but I'm using nothing but Super Bright Nickels these days. And you know I'm normally a DR guy.

If they (Fatbeams) are cheaper it's a win. I like Marcus, but I don't need his name on my string package.

I've heard and/or played them on several basses since people started hyping them a few months back. I tried them on a Brubaker KXB5 that was very similar to mine. Got to feel them and hear them. Also put a new set on that same bass as one of the strings was wonky right out of the pack. Had an issue with a different string with the new set. That, coupled with what I heard and felt on the good strings gave me no desire to switch from Fat Beams. They feel like I want, they sound like I want, they last like I want and the price is cool. I have friends who are on a constant hunt for "that next string"... I'm not. Thanks.
    :D

BTW do they make six string sets?

Edit: Just saw a six string set on ebay. Unfortunately not in the gauges I'd need.
