Hey everyone, I’ve been lurking for awhile but this is my first post.

I’ve been in the market for a new cabinet(s) lately and it seems that all my searches lead to the old Electro Voice TL606 1x15 cabs.

While I don’t have the tools or expertise to build one myself, I’m interested in buying an old TL606, a Mesa Boogie Diesel cabinet, even an OBC-115 would be good I think.

Anyways, today on my local Craigslist I saw someone selling 2 1x15 Pro Co (like the company that makes the Rat pedal and cables) Speaker Cabinets loaded with Peavey Black Widow speakers. The cabs are just painted flat black and look EXACTLY like a TL606 cab.

The price is good, even if I take out the Black Widow speakers and put in EVM-15Bs or whatever Eminence is in an OBC-115, that’s no problem. I’m really just curious if anyone has used these cabinets? seen one in person? are 15” Black Widows even good for bass in that type of cabinet?

I remember seeing a few of those back in the 1980s. They were pretty nice iirc, though at the time a local company called Joe's Sound & Salami (no kidding!) built an equivalent for less money so most of the bassists I encountered had the Joe's cab. Electro-Voice EVM-15B or JBL D-140 (or E-140?) seemed to be the most popular drivers to use in those cabs.

FWIW every time I've used a Peavey Black Widow driver I've been super how much better the cab sounded after I replaced the Peavey with a real speaker. I am definitely not a fan.

I'd try the Black Widows if you get it . They are good drivers .

It depends on which driver, some are not a good match for that enclosure tuning. There were 5 or 6 different models over the years, running the calculations is the only way to know which are suitable. The one that was used in the FH-1 folded horn was a very poor choice for example.

The ones I’m looking at don’t seem to be quite as tall, also there’s no carpet tolex, they’re painted black, and there’s a thin grille cloth over the speakers. Same general shape though. 3 ports ar the bottom etc.

Is it a good deal? Would also want to try them out first.

In my experience (lots of high hopes dashed by my frugal ways)many times you get what you paid for.
I would keep saving my dough for something I KNOW I really want. No question in my mind.

while not tl606's I've enjoyed Ampegs 15e / 15en's. They readily sell for $200 plus or minus $30.
I chased after tl606 design a few years back. The few I came across were a lot of low end build quality, DIY types. I just felt people were asking too much. The only decent ones I found were old Mesas. (The Road Ready? ) Though kinda hard to find and by that point I started using the Ampeg 15e's.
Again not tl606 but Avatar cabs can be had for a song on the used market. Many cats here also dig the fender rumble cabs (not my flavor).
    Good Luck!

    Too much hip thrust
I have owned the Diesel 1x15 and also rocked on a 2x15 Roadready years ago (definitely a killer old school cab). Nice midrange and forward type of presence for a 15, they dont go super deep. A big part of the TL606 is that it is designed relative to the EVM speaker. I believe EV actually designed the cab, using maff's from the time. It should sound best with EVM or clone.

This is NOT how I would describe MY ideal bass cabinet.(Personally).

Black widows were good - for their time. Sound reproduction itself isn't anything like it was back when they were invented. If you lookin for "ol skool", sure , maybe. But if your just looking for a good overall bass cab, Id pass. There are much better speakers to choose from these days.

YMMV, IMO, IME, Batteries not included, enlarged to show detail, some assembly required, serving suggestion, some cars not for use with some sets, toys do not actually fly on their own. etc..

Mesa's are the Cats A#% . Quality, like a tank. Like the German Panther of WW2.
While not a bass amp (then again, ampegs weren't solely bass amps either ), My Mesa .50 Caliber guitar (combo) tube amp was literally taken off the curbside trash of NYC. Dog pee on the black tolex, the cloth with a "dent" and cone torn......
I took it home. Cleaned it, used elmers glue with paper towel trick on the cone. Re seated all tubes......
Are you kidding??????!!!! She fired right up! You KNOW I immediately ran the 4 ohm out to my double 8 ohm stack. Holy 50 tube watt bass amps! It's gig worthy, and Bass worthy.
what's the point of this tangent? The quality of product.. Rock solid. Save up and score some quality that will last "lonnng time" .

thanks for the input everyone. Still on the lookout for a Mesa Boogie Diesel 1x15 or 2x15 or an OBC115 in the Metro Detroit area.
