I googled and got some good information, but can anyone point me to a comprehensive source on the sound gear 305 DXC 5 string? I found the 2002 catalogue but I can’t find what specs the dx 5 pickups have, and really what the phat eq does, except people didn’t like the noise and the feature was removed in 2004. I haven’t had a problem with it.

I don’t post much but I lurk, and lurk hard. Thanks in advance for any information.

It returned last year in some of the GSR20x models, eg GSR206.

I have an 18 SR256 with the standard EQ and am glad. Great bass.

Thanks for that. Looks like a boost only variant on the classic Baxandall stack.

So what about the pickups? What are dx 5 pickups? 5 is obviously for 5 string basses. But are they EMG knockoffs?

thank you all deeply for the information so far.

I don't think so, but I don't know. We have a resident Ibanez historian here who has proven to be a font of knowledge, but his username eludes me at this moment. I'll tag him as soon as I remember.

I don't know what the pickups are. But because of the front end buffer, the EMG EXB can be wired to either high impedance passive and low impedance active pickups. I have played mine with both the stock EMG HZ pickups, and with upgraded active EMG soapbars.

It could be. I looked up the specs, and it says "Phat II," which to me would indicate a change in what it does compared to the first generation "Phat." But I haven't played it so I don't know. According to the web page, it seems to do what is described by A9X. Link:

Hmm. I have the original Phat on my 2011 Ibby SRA305. On my Ibby BTB845V, I have the stacked bass/treble, and turn them both up without dumping mids. Hmm. I need to look into getting a Phat II control to see if that will slot in the onboard with the rest of my upgraged EMG preamp. I probably won't do that on the SRA305, because with its Pacific mahogany body, it already has enough mids.

Edit: there is a Phat II for sale on Ebay. Look closely: Ibanez Preamp Booster Wiring Phat II 2 Volume 1 Tone | eBay . It has a different plug. And the B+ is on the second lug, not the fifth lug, so that EMG solderless plugs (probably by design) won't fit. I'm not in the mood to experiment with hard wiring on a gig bass that I have spent a lot of time getting it to the point I have it reliable with no noise. But I post the link so everyone can see what an actual Phat II looks like compared to the first generation Phat from the EMG web site link I posted earlier.
