My current main bass is under threat from a poor fit with the universal case I bought it with; bass secondhand, case new, both from small local guitar shop. More precisely, the foam mold that the neck is supposed to rest in has deformed so that my bass slides to the side when I carry it, see Picture 1:

Picture 2 shows where it should be and used to rest fine:

Picture 3 shows the deformation in the foam:

I have tried using a little scrap piece of bubblewrap to support the neck in various ways, but it always slides.

I can't remember the name of the case and if there is any kind of warranty, either through the manufacturer or the store. Let's assume I'm stuck with it.

Any suggestions on a fix? How likely is it this can warp my neck?

  2. I've owned a Musician's Friend-type strat case that had similar cheap foam in the neck cradle. I replaced it with some sturdier foam from a camping mattress, but it eventually did the same thing again.

Bottom line is that you're probably stuck with a poor case.

Musician's Friend sells a decent hardshell universal bass case which I currently own, and which happens to be on sale: https://www.musiciansfriend.com/accessories/musicians-gear-mgmbg-molded-abs-electric-bass-case

The foam in the neck cradle seems to be sturdier and mine also has a velcro strap to hold the neck in place.

Get a towel or other cushioning on both sides of the headstock.

  4. I had a case that did a similar thing once.

I went to a local fabric store and bought some 2" thick foam that they use for upholstery. First I cut the foam to the dimensions of the bottom of the case, than I laid the bass down and traced around it, cutting that shape out of the foam. Cut out the portion that supports the neck and put it in. Stayed in place pretty well and worked for less $$ than a different case.

    Just an idea.

If you do get other foam to fill, cover it with soft material - some finishes react with some foams.

  6. Had no idea, never gave it a thought or had issues. Good to know.

  7. I covered my "firmer foam fix" with rat fur from the local Joanne's fabric store, using spray adhesive. I just wish the firmer camping mattress foam had held its shape!

I find cases to offer more trouble than protection. A good gigbag was my answer to this kind of issue. Not really helpful I know.
