I am in the market for a violin-style bass. I am having problems finding one in my area to try out. I remember trying one a few months back and loving it, but I was sitting down. I was wondering if anyone had problems securing a bass like this to your body while standing. In this Youtube video, this guy solves the problem by putting his leg out (see around 1:00) Is there a better way to secure the bass, perhaps with some kind of special strap? Thanks
Ahh... you're referring to "neck dive". And how to get it to not do that. Here's a few things you can do: - Play with your left thumb behind or underneath the neck so it can't fall (this lets you spread your fingers out easier anyway) - Get a leather strap with suede on the back, which won't slide as easily as a nylon strap - Use your right forearm to hold the bass body firmly against your body, thereby making it harder for the neck to dive (think of a see-saw, and your arm is the fat kid nobody wanted to play on the see-saw with) Personally, I never expected a bass or guitar to simply hang in the perfect position. I always made my posture a part of my technique, so it's not an issue for me no matter what kind of a bass I'm playing (and I have a Univox Electra "Beatle Bass" copy which would do the same thing if I let it).
