Well, be disappointed no longer. They're not.

    Jaco is JAH-KO.

    Jackson's nickname is JACK-O.

  7. wow, you must live in a pretty ignorant town to be the only two ppl to know of Jaco...

I visited the Jaco site a while back and one of his family members was on-line and cleared this up for a bunch of us,it is JACK-O.
The story goes that his brother had a hard time with saying words and it was his way of saying the name.

  10. maybe they do, the world may never know

You shouldn't believe everything you read on the net. It makes you look silly.;)

If you're trying to tell us it's "JACK-O", then everybody who has worked with him on a live record or DVD (and I have most of them), from Joni Mitchell to Pat Metheny to Hirum Bullock (etc.) has been saying it wrong.
I even have Jaco himself saying his own name on a live CD somewhere and even he pronounced it "JAH-KO".

He is always introduced as "JAH-KO", not JACK-O  .
Like "Taco" as someone pointed out.

On all the recordings - I hear it as a French :

    "Jacques" followed by "Oh" .

An excellent point since he is of French decent.

John Francis Pastorious III (as I believe he introduces himself on "The Birthday Concert").

Not that this has anything to do with the late Mr. Pastorius, but in Italian culture, the name "Jaco" is pronounced "Yah-ko".
