Publishing companies?

    what do they do, aside from providing another way for bands to get screwed out of their money and/or songs?

    Actually, I think a publishing company is the one corporate entity that's actually on the side of the musician (assuming he/she writes his/her own music). Record companies typically let the writer keep the publishing rights, and many artists just set up their own publishing companies to administer and collect royalties.

    If you don't write and publish your own material, you're right; you probably get screwed.
