  1. What do pickup covers do? Is it a purely for looks or does it create some form of metallic field that helps pups or something else?

I always figured it was to keep beer and gunk from getting in and gumming up the works. Then again, with the open sides and all, that wouldn't be particularly effective.

  4. Originally they were used to aid sheilding of the pickup. There used to be an extra grounding wire from the pickups which would be attatched to the pickup covers.

However, im not sure if it actually worked to shield the pickups. It probably has some effect on the sound, however, its mainly asthetic/for different playing positions.
