Howdy - I saw you play at the starwood in 1980 with, I believe 'eddie and the subtitles' and 'black flag'. I seem to recall that a young guy played trumpet on a couple of songs but it was so long ago, I had forgotten about it until today. Today, a friend let me listen to his copy of ballhog or tugboat(great album, by the way) and I saw that flea played trumpet on one of the songs. Any chance that it was flea playing with you in 1980? If it was, then I have had the somewhat rare opportunity to have seen flea play trumpet with 'minutemen', and bass with the 'circle jerks'.
Man, I am really glad that I got a chance to enjoy the LA punk scene when I was in high school.

    thanks

    hi,

that was flea on "sidemouse advice" on "ball-hog or tugboat" but he never played trumpet w/the minutemen. that cat who was on stage w/us was crane - he appears on all the tracks of the minutemen's "project mersh" ep, playing trumpet and singing backup. he was in the band tragicomedy and lives in palos verdes, ca.

Thanks for the info mike. I will never forget that show as long as I live. It scared the bejeezus out of me. I went with my friend steve(we would make the trek from placentia to hollywood to see shows during high school) At one point during the show, a mob of people started beating on steve. There was not a thing I could do. Luckily, steve is 6'6" and went about 250# at the time. If it had happened to me I think I could have ended up in the ER.

I have never seen so many fights at a show as I did that night. Whenever any music magazine does an article about violence and music, a picture, taken from the starwood balcony, of steve fighting off approx. 15 people, , usually surfaces.

Have you ever written about your experience in the LA scene circa 79-80? I recently read Lexicon Devil, and the change in atmosphere at shows truly corroborated what I experienced. I don't know if it can be blamed entirely on HB punks, though. I blame it on 'the crowd', for covering 'for your love.:D

    david,

violence is weak - at gigs, in the home, at school/work, on the streets or orchestrated by politicians. sorry for your bud steve. hope he got out ok.

one day I'll write about those days. I have talked to folks who have written about them themselves, like steve blush w/"american hardcore," michael azerrad in "our band could be your life" (titled after a line I wrote in a minutemen song) and brendan mullen in "we got the neutron bomb." it's happening that folks are writing about that period cuz it got pushed under the rug for so long. the "conventional" wisdom was punk went from the sex pistols to nirvana w/nothing in between!

believe it or not, the crowd (the band you mentioned) are still doing gigs!

The crowd are still gigging? That is kind of cool, I always enjoyed their shows. I was a huge Plugz fan, back in the day. My first punk show was X and the plugz at the starwood. I'm going to see X play here in seattle in a few weeks. I can't believe it's been over 20 years since I last saw them.

I appreciate the correspondence and look forward to seeing you when you next make a trip to rain city.

The Hellride gig sounds cool, I just hope it is before dec 21, otherwise I'm going to be east coast bound for the holidays. If I am going to be out of town, I'll be sure to let friends know about the hellride show. I surely have some friends who won't want to miss it.

Yeah, I am quite fond of the kink's song, the jam's version is pretty cool as well.

David watts is just my talkbass name. My real name is killian, pleased to meet you.
