  4. OK, to be a BIT helpful and on topic, I haven't played many acoustic basses. The ones I have played feel and sound a lot different from electric. I'm sure you can find some decent ones. Ovation has a good reputation in their acoustic instruments, and they have a lower end model called "Applause" that may be around 300-400 bucks, Im really not sure, but from how their guitars are they are a bit over your price limit... I can't really reccomend much of anything but to try some out if you can, and if that's not an option, try looking at the User Reviews of some products (which you should be looking up at Musician's Friend, Music123 and all those sites, whether or not your buying from there, it'll give you an idea what's out there). There are user reviews here on Talk Bass (check them out), but you may have better luck with the reviews on http://www.harmonycentral.com...

The best acoustic bass I know of is made by Tacoma
    http://www.tacomaguitars.com
I have one. I tried half a dozen acoustic basses and the Tacoma far outclassed them all.
Here is a link to where users have posted their reviews of the Tacoma basses.

But those may be out of your price range. Olympia makes their version of the Tacoma bass, but it's not as fine of an instrument.
Olympia is to Tacoma what Squire is to Fender. Here's the link to the Olympia site.

And here's a link to user reviews of the Olympia basses.

Tacoma provides a hard case which perfectly fits their bass. I don't know if Olympia basses come with a hardcase, but the Tacoma case should fit it just fine since they are the same shape. You can probably order a case from Tacoma.
I've tried Olympias in stores. The fit, finish and sound quality are not as good as my Tacoma, but something about the design of both basses-they project very well. Other acoustic basses I have tried were very quiet, unplugged.
